Pedagogics of Maria Montessori and Rudolf Steiner – A comparative approach (Bachelor thesis)

The topic of the final year project report is “The pedagogics of Maria Montessori and Rudolf Steiner – a comparative approach” and relates to Maria Montessori’s and Rudolf Steiner’s work and their educational systems. Montessorian schools and kindergartens encourage children to keep busy alone or in groups since in this way they become independent from an early age. Through observation, Montessori was grounded on the cognitive and developmental side of the children. The teachers are mere observers in the educational environment; they let the children discover the knowledge and the skills all alone through games and activities. Teachers interfere only when help is needed. The children move freely in the grounds, choosing the games, and they can play with them for as long as they want without being interrupted by anyone. The child gains confidence when it is not interrupted but left to finish the activity it has started. Children in each class have age difference since the younger ones imitate and learn from the older ones. The assessment of the students is done in a descriptive way. In Waldorf kindergartens and schools the teacher takes part in the educational process of the students. The children in the kindergarten do various activities according to the season of the year, discovering in that way nature. A special characteristic is that, if the weather permits it, the child moves and works alone out in the nature. The curriculum in early classes focuses more on artistic and manual work while in advanced classes it focuses more on the so called seasonal courses (Epochenunterricht). All the students advance and there aren’t any grades. The child’s assessment is organized by the educator. It is essential to note that all children in class have the same age in contrast to montessorian education
