Self – awareness, problem solving and executive control during childhood (Master thesis)

The present study is constituted by two parts, the theoretical and the research. The first part includes three chapters, in which the structure of cognitive system is analyzed . In the first chapter, basic elements round the growth of cognitive abilities in school aged students are presented. Initially, an effort of defining various terms is being conducted, then the various cognitive dexterities that every individual develops across his life span, are presented on a greater scale, and finally the importance of these factors in the processing and comprehension of data is being discussed. Afterwards, the tripartite organization of mind is being presented, according to Dimitriou’s theory, as well as the five specialized structural systems, known as EDOS. In the second chapter the metacognitive faculty of students is examined. More specifically, an effort of defining the interpretation of metacognition is being conducted, its importance for the cognitive developmental course is highlighted and the metacognitive sentiments, which constitute expression of the wider significance of metacognition are being thoroughly analyzed. In the third chapter, an analytic presentation of executive function is attempted. More precisely, in the beginning various interpretations of Executive Control are presented, as result from research on international bibliography. Following, the tree components of Executive Function, their most important characteristics, which constitute EF, the cross-correlation of the developmental course and, finally, the cross correlation of developmental course within students’s age are mentioned, based on inquiring data. The second part constitutes of the research part and includes three chapters. Extensively, in the fourth chapter the methodology of the conducted research is presented. Furthermore, the aim, the importance of the research and the inquiring questions are analyzed. The tools of measurement, the process of data collection and the sample are also presented. In the fifth chapter, the results that came up from the statistical processing of data are being presented. In the sixth chapter the research findings are being discussed, the conclusions and proposals on exploitation of results are postulated.
