The hiring process in primary educational system of Greece from 1950 to present (Master thesis)

One of the leading issues in contemporary educational affairs has to do with the recruiting of educators in the Greek educational system. Nowadays, a great number of Educational Department graduates who hope to acquire permanent job positions within the Greek schooling system fail to go beyond the occasional hourly-based or replacement posts, as there is no official, standardised method of selecting educators. Nevertheless, the nation’s educational history has been marked by two fundamental systems of recruitment, which have hitherto secured employment for the greater body of Greek educators. These two systems are the Year Book (Epetirida) and the A.S.E.P. competition. The goal of this research is to explore the opinions of currently active Primary School tutors with regards to the country’s recruitment system for educators, as well as to trace the significance of the said system within the evolution of contemporary education. Along parallel lines, the present inquiry investigates the Greek system’s framework for selecting appropriate educators, as this has been established and tried since the 1950s. In order to meet the aforementioned goals, this research collected data from teachers employed in Primary Schools at the county of Drama in Northern Greece. The methodological tool used was a questionnaire of open, closed and semi-closed design format. The research attempted to detect the effectiveness and merit of the two systems and it was found out that the educators were satisfied by the system that was used when they were appointed and therefore they highlight that political and economical purposes are mainly responsible for the constant modifications that are being made. Finally, based on the participants’ own responses, the research endeavours to discern a recruiting system that would benefit future applicants.
