The psychosocial and emotional profile of greek students participating in cyber-bullying and traditional bullying incidents: a comparative study (Doctoral thesis)

Cyber-bullying/victimization (CB/CV) incidents take place in a different context compared to traditional bullying/victimization (TB/TV), a fact that may affect the extent to which adolescents’ individual and social characteristics will act as risk factors for their participation. The purpose of this study was to compare the psychosocial and emotional profile of Greek Junior High school students involved in CB/CV incidents, with that of students participating in TB/TV incidents, based on the General Aggression Model, the theory of individual differences, and the interpretative theories of Computer Mediated Communication (CMC). The study was conducted with the use of self-report questionnaires among 1,097 students attending the three grades of Junior High school in the regions of Eastern Macedonia-Thrace and Central Macedonia, Greece. The results indicated that most students participated only in TB/TV incidents, or simultaneously in both phenomena (CB/CV and TB/TV), with the same role or multiple roles. The investigation of the effect that participant roles had on students’ individual and social characteristics did not reveal any significant differences between CB and TB bullies, while among victims, differences were observed only in terms of their social relations, since CB victims had higher scores than TB victims. Path analyses indicated mostly common predictive factors for CB and TB, and differences which regarded the prediction of the phenomena by social relations and social anxiety. Results of path analyses for CV and TV revealed several similarities in terms of their predictive factors, but also indicated the significant role that online disinhibition plays in the prediction of CV. In conclusion, this study confirms the overlap of CB/CV and TB/TV incidents, highlights the common personal and social characteristics of students participating in the phenomena and, finally, reveals factors associated with their differentiated participation
