The underrepresentation of women in primary school administration: the example of Kavala County (Master thesis)
Αναστασιάδου, Ορθοδοξία/ Anastasiadou, Orthodoxia
The study of the state of today’s education highlights the fact that women constitute the majority of teaching staff in the schools, making the profession primarily "female". However, this percentage of women is not reflected at the administration level, as men hold more positions. Therefore, regardless of the progressive social change in women's status in Greece and the institutional framework that provides equal treatment and participation of both sexes in positions of responsibility, women continue to be under-represented for a variety of reasons. The purpose of this study is to investigate and interpret the causes of the phenomenon of underrepresentation of women in managerial positions, resulting in disproportionate participation in the educational administrative hierarchy. At the same time, this paper explores the gender differences regarding the views of teachers' participation and their desire or lack of in the decision-making process at school as well as the obstacles encountered in their professional development, using Primary Schools in Kavala County as an example. 140 male and female primary school teachers from Kavala were given a questionnaire with closed questions to fill in anonymously. Analysis of the survey results reveals the reasons for the low figures of women in educational management positions, which were primarily family responsibilities and a passion for classroom teaching, while at the end of the study an attempt to interpret and compare the data found in Greek and foreign literature was made.
