Development and evaluation of a teaching learning sequence (TLS) for the interpretation of melting using particle theory by elementary students (Master thesis)

Particle theory and its use for the interpretation of phenomena is considered to be too difficult, especially for primary students. That΄s why some researchers suggest the delay of its introduction in primary education. The aim of this work is to examine through the design and implementation of a Teaching-Learning Sequence (TLS) the degree of its effectiveness in understanding the submicro level and the students’ ability to interpret physical phenomena at this level. Particularly, the main purpose of this research is to examine the extent to which students can understand the submicro level in order to interpret an unknown phenomenon. The research was based on two applications and the sample was consisted of 6th grade students from two different schools. The research tools which were used (both in the pilot and in the main application) were the questionnaire and the interview, while the analysis of the data was based on the qualitative method and in particular, on the content analysis. The results obtained through the research confirmed the effectiveness of this TLS. A number of students, showed that they understood the submicro level and the design of models, knowledge that they many of them used in order to interpret other technological Problems-unknown phenomena. The main conclusion of this research is that submicro level and its use to interpret phenomena could be included in Primary School’s curriculum. Although submicro level is a quite complex issue to be understood by primary students, the existence of a properly designed teaching method, as it was proved by the present research, can lead primary students not only to understand particle theory but also to use it in order to explain other physical phenomena
