Humor and literacy practices in the kindergarten (Bachelor thesis)

This essay focuses on humor in preschool education and aims at promoting the effectiveness and usefulness of humor in teaching. Its purpose is to point out a new form of learning that will enrich the way the learning process takes place. The structure of the thesis consists of two parts; the theoretical framework in which all the terms contained and used within the text are presented and analyzed through references that will inform the reader before the second part of the study. The latter includes the practical application of the theory and the drawing of relevant conclusions. Initially, the term "humor" is presented in detail. Several questions will be answered concerning the origin and use of humor, from the first references up to date. All the theories that will describe the different meanings of humor will contribute to the fact that the reader will have an overall view of the term at the end of the text. After that, issues concerning the concept of literacy and its connection to learning in preschool education will follow. Then, we will focus on early childhood and particularly kindergarten age. Consequently, the chapter that follows deals with the features of this age group, especially with the way preschoolers conceive humor depending on the age group they belong to. The implementation of two activities for the teaching of humor in the kindergarten and finally the relevant conclusions of this research study follow. This practical part took place in a real kindergarten class, where children learnt about humor and then were asked to produce humor. Τhe results will be presented through the children’s drawings and will be analyzed in order to obtain the relevant conclusions of this research
