Τhe relationship among executive control, self awareness and verbal ability during childhood (Bachelor thesis)

The current project examines the relationship between awareness, executive control and verbal ability during school age. The sample of the research consisted of 20 pupils, aged 11-12 years old, of both sexes. The measurement For the determination of self-awareness, of verbal ability and of the post-cognitive experiences was conducted by issuing two kinds of cognitive projects regarding the verbal-sentence formulating ability. More specifically, during the procedure of solving the verbal projects it was used the method of pronounced thought for the measurement of awareness. Each participant was examined individually. and the role of the researcher was limited. Furthermore, the measurement of the executive control was conducted using an executive control Test. Furthermore, the measurement of the executive control was conducted with the test Visually Cued Color–Shape Task of Zelazo, Craik και Booth (2004). From the result it turned out that the participants with a high performance in the cognitive projects gave accurate verbal reports, explained the problem, understood their mistakes and had few to no retaining mistakes. While pupils with a low performance in the cognitive projects regarding the verbal ability did not give accurate verbal reports, did not explain the problem while solving it and usually did not understand their mistakes. Also, they had many retaining mistakes. Concluding, it is noted that there is a two-way relationship between the post-cognitive awareness, the post-cognitive experiences and the executive control for the solution to cognitive projects. Therefore, the effective solution of the cognitive tasks is affected by the adequacy of the executive control and self-awareness
