Elicitation of kindergarteners’ preconceptions for clouds and rain (Bachelor thesis)

According to Driver’s constructivist approach in science teaching, the elicitation of little kids’ preconceptions is very important for the teaching planning. In this thesis, kindergarteners’ preconceptions about clouds and rain are discussed. For this purpose, a research on a sample of 20 preschoolers of a public kindergarten in Xanthi was conducted. The particular queries focused on what kids perceive as clouds and rain and the way they explain their formation. Data collection was implemented through projects and semi-structured individual interviews. The classification results of kindergarteners’ answers, demonstrate that kids usually have more than one explanation for the same phenomenon. Some of them match with the results of previous studies and follow Piaget's theory for development stages, in which "primitive reasoning" exists in infancy. On the other hand, several of them are based on elementary explanation mechanisms of simple or complex natural process. Consequently, it is very important the preconceptions of kindergarteners to be investigated, as they are the foundations on which teacher has to rely on, in order to design the appropriate learning tools for the teaching process. This can lead to pupils’ preparation for being taught the scientific models about clouds and rain in their future learning life
