The relation between conceptual change and executive function in elementary school students (Bachelor thesis)

The main goal of this study was to investigate the relationship between the Executive Function and Conceptual Change, and how this relationship is affected by age. More specifically, the research focused on the role of executive function during the invocation and use of the initial and scientific knowledge. The research involved 133 elementary students (62 boys and 71 girls) of the firth and fifth grade. To investigate the role of Executive Function in the invocation and use of the initial and scientific knowledge there have been designed two Conceptual Change tasks and two Executive Function tasks, in which the students were examined individually. In both tasks there were two main dependent variables (a) accuracy and (b) the results of the average Reaction Time. Two tasks implemented to measure Conceptual Change: The Re-Cat and SP-Ver task. Τwo Reaction Time tasks, that were developed for the needs of the current study and were adapted and presented using the E-prime software for computer administration applied to evaluate the Executive Function. The results showed that Executive Function plays an important role in the invocation and use of both the initial conceptual and scientific responses, which are products of Conceptual Change. More specifically, it was found that the initial responses were more accurate and faster than the scientific responses both in the Re-Cat and SP-Ver tasks. While also the correlations between the Reaction Time of Executive Function and the Accuracy of Conceptual Change were either non-existent or very low
