A research investigation of spatial distribution and pattern, concerning the early years classes of the primary education (Bachelor thesis)

The current project aims to investigate 1st-4th grade students’ perceptions about space orientation and three dimension (3D) space. The 279 students (n1st grade=61, n2nd grade=86, n3rd grade=70, n4th grade=62) participating in this project were recruited from urban elementary schools of Alexandroupolis. Researchers used the students’ language and drawings/sketches, as research instruments, in order to access students’ conceptions and prior knowledge. Students participated in two different activities, i.e. «The home to school route» and «Myself». The project results revealed that, the higher the students’ age was, the better their orientation ability and 3D space perception. This conceptual development is also a direct result of the spiral structure of curriculum context. This structure of Environmental Science textbooks is based on Bruner’s constructivistic models, which are used for Greek primary school curriculum
