Relational aggression, hostile attribution bias and big five: examining the links among adolescents (Bachelor thesis)

Καραγιάννη, Κυριακή/ Karagianni, Kyriaki

The purpose of the current study is to examine the relationships among Hostile Attribution Bias (HAB), personality (Five Factor Model) and the two distinct functional subtypes of relational aggression (proactive and reactive) in a sample of 347 adolescents (193 girls) attending the 6th grade of primary school as well as the three grades of the Junior High School, who completed a self-report questionnaire. The results indicated gender differences with regards to the functions of relational aggression and the big five personality factors. Specifically, boys reported higher levels of both proactive and reactive RA, while girls scored higher in Agreeableness, Conscientiousness and Openness to Experience. Moreover, the research demonstrated that relational aggression (proactive and reactive) was positively associated with HAB and Neuroticism, and negatively with Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion and Openness to Experience. Regarding the prediction of proactive relational aggression, regression analyses showed that boys involved in reactive relational aggression, who scored low in Conscientiousness, are more likely to engage in proactive relational aggression. In terms of reactive relational aggression, the present findings indicate that adolescents who endorsed proactive relationally aggressive behaviors, and scored high in HAB for relational provocations as well as in Conscientiousness, and low in Agreeableness are more likely to report reactive relationally aggressive behaviors. Overall, the present results suggest that some intrapersonal factors such as personality and social cognition could be associated with adolescents' engagement in relationally aggressive behaviors. Implications for future research and educational practice are discussed
