The educational process during the civil war period. An analysis of the educational process in the case of the democratic army of Greece (Master thesis)

The paper studies the views and actions of the Greek left party, in terms of the education context, during the years 1944-1949. After first outlining the historical context of the German (fascist) Occupation period, thereafter, it thoroughly depicts the period of the Greek Civil War. During this period, the Greek left party, attempted to play, it can be said played, a major role in the social and national developments of the country. From 1942 to 1944 it starred at the organization of the National Resistance, settled up the National Liberation Front (EAM), the Hellenic People's Liberation Army (ELAS), the Unified Pan-Hellenic Youth Organization (EPON) and later the "Mountain’s Government", The National Liberation Commission, the Democratic Army of Greece, and therefore rebuilding and running institutions on popular bases. Among these institutions was the educational one. During the Civil War, the Left party attempted to seize power, or at least to exercise power in parts of the Greek territory, and reopened certain institutions, amongst them the educational. Therefore, the educational actions that the Left has undertaken to reconstruct the educational institution are described, in the areas under its control, such as the operation of schools, the establishment of teacher education schools, the organization of teaching conferences, the publication of school manuals, the operation of illiterate schools and others. The research was made throughout the study of books, prints, mainly newspapers and magazines, published by the left at that time, as well as interviews taken from people, that took place onto the educational process, during this period. The work concludes by drawing conclusions about the relationship between the views and actions of the Greek left party for education within a Marxist pedagogy context
