Effective learning at primary school. Principals’ beliefs by primary education (Master thesis)

The aim of the study was to investigate primary school principals’ beliefs about effective learning and their goals and actions towards achieving that. Twenty principals from primary schools in Kavala participated in the study. Participants were tested with a semi-structured interview that involved questions regarding principals’ beliefs about effective learning and its relationship with teaching, and their goals and actions towards achieving effective learning. The results showed that principals strongly associate effective learning with the acquisition of cognitive and social objectives by the pupils, whilst they regard the teachers, the parents, the principals themselves, the pupils and the school curriculum as the most significant factors of effective learning. In addition, principals view teaching as the tool for effective learning, although learning is a broader concept than teaching. They also consider the improvement of teaching methods, the formation of a positive school climate and the emotional development of pupils to be their most important objectives. More over, they consider the seamless cooperation with teachers, parents, and other educational institutions, such as the school counselors, the administrative officers, the cultural associations, and the school board, as their most crucial actions for achieving the effective learning. The school involvement in educational programs is treated as a crucial action that leads to effective learning. The results are discussed on the basis of the current theories about effective learning
