The purpose of this study is to investigate the association between the two distinct functions of relational aggression (RA; proactive and reactive), social goals (perceived popularity, social dominance orientation, intimacy) and jealousy in sample of 235 adolescents (120 girls) attending the three grades of the Junior High School, who completed a self-report questionnaire. The results indicated important gender differences with respect to the proactive function of relational aggression and social goals. On the other hand, reactive RA and intimacy were not affected by gender. Specifically, boys reported higher levels of proactive RA, social dominance orientation and perceived popularity, while girls scored higher in intimacy. Moreover, no grade level differences were observed. Besides, the research demonstrated that proactive RA was positively associated with social dominance orientation, perceived popularity and jealousy, and negatively with intimacy. Concerning reactive RA, the findings showed that it was positively associated with perceived popularity, intimacy and jealousy. Regarding the prediction of proactive RA, regression analyses showed that boys involved in reactive RA, who scored high in in social dominance orientation, are more likely to get involved in proactive RA. Furthermore, with regards to reactive RA, the results indicate that girls who endorsed relationally aggressive behaviors, and scored levels in perceived popularity, intimacy and jealousy were more likely to report reactive RA. In all, the present findings indicated that social goals and jealousy during adolescence could be associated with RA. Results are discussed in terms of future research and educational practice
