The role of executive functions and self awareness on math problems’ processing (Bachelor thesis)

The aim of this study is the investigation of executive functions and metacognitive abilities and the way they associate with the ability of troubleshooting a mathematical problem. In this study was tested a random sample of 20 students aged 11-12 years old, of the 6th grade of Primary School N. Chili, Alexandroupolis. The examination and the practice of participants were conducted through individual tests, which were consisted of three mathematical tasks and specifically numbers, mathematical operations and proportions. As research tools were used a) the previous mathematical tasks b) a test of executive control and c) the thinking aloud combined with metacognitive skills. To determine the level of participants’ executive control was used the electronic form of Zelazo, Craik and Booth’s Vicually Cued Color-Shape Task (2004). Moreover, to determine the metacognitive awareness in the process of solving mathematical problems we resorted to the thinking aloud method. The processing of results is discussed in the light of current literature on the structure of cognitive system but also on contemporary views on the relation between the executive control and metacognitive awareness on solving mathematical problems. As demonstrated in this study, metacognitive awareness and executive control are connected and have influence on the effective solving of mathematical problems. In particular, it seemed that not only the adequacy of executive control affects the effective solving of mathematical tasks, but also the accuracy of the estimates for their solving process
