Women as elementary school principals: theory and research (Bachelor thesis)

The topic which this theoretical and research study discusses is the women as elementary school principals – Theory and Research. The basic aim of this study is to investigate the views of both women and men School heads, for the presence of the woman Headmistress into the administrative hierarchy of education. Moreover, this study aims to designate the convergence or deviation points of the Headmistresses and Headmasters' views as each one of them is a separate and integral link of the same chain - the administration of the School Unit - and perceives the principal's position from his/her own perspective. Into the framework of the research inquiry of this topic some semi structured interviews took place, with four Headmasters/mistresses of elementary school units participating, from whom two are women and the other two are men coming from the municipality of Evros and specifically from the city of Alexandroupolis. There has been an effort to investigate the views of the members of education, in order to ascertain the position of the woman headmistress into the administration of the school unit, to study the administrative styles of women, to detect if the Subjects of the research consider that women are more appropriate for teaching and men for leading and to verify if the role of sex , forms a factor which affects the administration of education. Furthermore, it is significant to establish if and in what degree stereotypes and prejudice affect the presence of women as members of administration, to study the factor and the causes of the low in number representation of women in administrative positions according to the opinion of the Subjects of the research and to verify which are the barriers arised for the development of women in administration based on the Subjects of the research. This theoretical and research study shows that even though efforts for the improvement of the position of the woman in the administration of the school unit are taking place, it is obvious that the barriers and the prejudice she has to face due to her sex, haven't been eliminated yet, by making it hard to step up on to the hierarchy of education
