Understanding children for the human and superhuman mind: an intercultural study (Bachelor thesis)

The Theory of the Mind refers to the ability of an individual to attribute mental states such as beliefs, desires, feelings, thoughts, perceptions, intentions, aspirations, dreams and wishes to himself that aims at the interpretation of behavior. It also relates to the nature and development of human understanding of the mental world and its mental states, and in particular studies the question of how children learn about their own minds as well as the minds of the others. Although scientists have different views on the emergence of this theory, they argue that a theory of understanding the mind is built on children over time, that is, as their age grows. The present work refers to research aimed at finding out how preholked children understand, the way human and non-human minds work and at what age they cease to humanize God. The survey involved 79 children between 3.5 and 5.5 years of age, 31 of whom were Muslim children, while the rest were Orthodox. The places of research were Komotini (for the Muslims) and Alexandroupolis (for the Orthodox). The research tools chosen were based initially on the experimental preparation and familiarization of the involved (participants) with a human (girl / boy) and a non-human (God) offender. The work of the theory of mind presented was "The Box of Biscuits". The results of the research have shown that children aged 3.5 years perceive God anthropomorphically by attributing human qualities, but at 4.5 and thereafter, when the Theory of the Mind appears, they begin to perceive God as omniscient. There was also a significant difference between the Orthodox and the Muslims on the ontological distinction
