Enhancing creativity in education: teachers’ perspectives (Bachelor thesis)

Φωτοπούλου, Ξακουστία/ Fotopoulou, Xakoustia

The aim of this research was to highlight the benefits that education could receive if creativity was a part of every one of her aspect, through the exploration of it’s conceptual, historical and scientific dimension as well as the teacher’s views on creativity’s contribution to the teaching and pedagogical process. The survey, which was accomplished by primary school teachers, teaching in the urban area of Alexandroupolis during the school year 2016 - 2017, revealed that: 1. Teachers consider that creativity is a pre-existing charisma and a personality characteristic. 2. They noted that the creative result is more likely to be accomplished by constant working and thinking than momentary inspiration and luck. 3. Teachers, despite their focus on the inherent nature of creativity, have argued that education can help to strengthen and cultivate it. 4. With regard to the creative person’s profile, teachers argued that he/she is not afraid to make mistakes, that he/she has curiosities, originality and imaginative thinking. 5. The contribution of education in enhancing student’s creativity is emphasized by teachers. They argue that school is the ideal environment to enhance a student’s creativity and gives more creative opportunities to children than the Kindergarten, but they are disappointed by the content of school books and curriculum. 6. About the educational methods that they are using during their lesson it must be said that the working in pairs and lecture are the two most preferred teaching methods
